The film, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, released on June 11, 1982, was an immediate hit--surpassing Star Wars to become the highest-grossing film of all time (until 1993). Produced and directed by Steven Spielberg, the film recounts the story of a boy who befriends a stranded extraterrestrial. The story was based upon Spielberg's own imaginary alien companion following his parents' divorce.
